What is a PIP? What does it do?

A system that allows you to install third-party modules on your system can be found on the website at:  To give an example in its simplest form, let’s say you need to use a calculator in your project, a developer has previously written such a program and installed the source code in this system, and you can use this module with the help of a pip. you download it to your computer and include it in your project and start using it.

You don’t necessarily have to use this method to install third-party modules on the system, but in this way you can use other modules faster and more easily.

How to set up pips?

You can perform setup when you type the following code by opening cmd (command prompt) in Windows.

python -m pip install -U pip

If you have two different python versions on your system(2.x and 3.x) remember to write to the end of the pip version that suits it. python -m pip install -U pip3 like

If you have not added a python path to system variables (PATH) when setting up python (there is a tile in the bottom of the “add python to path” type when you setup), this command returns an error. First record the python path to the system variable, then perform the setup with this command.

Linux varies depending on the deployment you use

sudo apt-get install python-pip

With this command, you can perform the setup, or you can download the file and set it up yourself. 

After you download the file, open the terminal in the directory you downloaded, enter the following command, and the rest will handle it yourself.


Pip usage

The process to install the module using pip is very simple

pip install {module name}


pip install time

modules in pip system. With this command, you will have downloaded the latest version of that module. Let’s just write the version you want to download by placing the “=” sign at the end of the module to the end of the module for an earlier version or older


pip install time==1.0

In the meantime, the time module comes ready in the system and I don’t know if there is such a version i wrote to be a complete example.

To update the module you used in your project

pip install --upgrade {module name}

You can use the command.

Let’s say you misspelled the module name or no longer want to use the module that you downloaded in that project, you can use the following command to remove the module.

pip uninstall {module name}

Since the date I published this article on 08.08.2018, it has been the most read topic I have shared on my blog. It means that there are many people who are curious about this subject. For this reason, I wanted to clarify the subject a little more and shoot a video. It would be good to make the subject a little more understandable.

Let’s explain the operations performed in the video in order.

First of all, we set up a virtual environment with python3. We create a virtual environment in its horn and ensure that the project we will do is isolated from the system files. After isolating, we can download and use the python libraries we want to use in our project with the pip install command. As an example, I showed the download and uninstall of the flask and requests modules in the video.
